About this position
The Department of Health Sciences at Lund University, Faculty of Medicine, is offering a full-time PhD position within the Ageing and Health research group. This interdisciplinary group is affiliated with the Centre for Ageing and Supportive Environments (CASE) and coordinates the Swedish National Graduate School on Ageing and Health (SWEAH). The group is also engaged in the university’s profile area Proactive Ageing, providing a vibrant research environment focused on ageing and health.
This doctoral position is part of the Nordic-Baltic collaborative project “AI for Mindful Care and Ageing” (AMICA), which investigates how vulnerability is constructed, negotiated, and practiced in AI-automated home care for older adults. The project aims to generate empirical knowledge on the impact of AI automation on care experiences, care labor, inequality, and welfare systems; advance theoretical understanding of vulnerability shaped by social identities, life-course histories, and structural conditions; and inform policy and governance for responsible and ethical AI in home care across the Nordic–Baltic region.
The research combines gerontology, medical science, critical social science perspectives, and science and technology studies. The PhD student will focus on AI-enabled home care in Sweden and collaborate with partner universities for cross-country comparisons. Key responsibilities include planning and conducting the PhD project, data collection and analysis, publishing results in scientific articles, presenting a doctoral dissertation, participating in seminars and relevant activities, and communicating research findings to diverse audiences. The position may also involve teaching and other departmental duties (up to 20%).
Applicants must hold a second-cycle qualification or equivalent (at least 240 credits, with 60 credits at the second cycle), and at least 60 credits in medical science. Sufficient subject knowledge is required. For those with a first-cycle qualification outside Scandinavia, English proficiency equivalent to 3 years of upper secondary school is required if English is not the first language. Additional requirements include proficiency in English and Swedish (spoken and written), and good computer skills. Meritorious qualifications include experience with qualitative research methods, multidisciplinary or transnational research teams, research with older adults, and projects involving digital technologies.
Lund University offers full-time, fixed-term employment for four years, with salary, generous holiday allowance, and occupational pension. Employment may be extended if teaching or departmental duties are undertaken. The desired start date is 1 April 2026, but no later than 1 September 2026.
Applications should be submitted via the university’s recruitment system and must include a personal motivation letter (in English), relevant diploma, CV or equivalent, contact information for two reference persons, and a writing sample (maximum 10 pages).
