About this position

Université Libre de Bruxelles is recruiting 1 PhD researcher for the MSCA Doctoral Network DESIRE (Decarbonising Energy-intenSIve industries with REnewable synthetic fuels).

The open position is DC14: H2/NH3 combustion in a reverse-flow, pressurized, rich-quench-lean combustor. The project focuses on sustainable fuels, combustion science, chemical kinetics, fluid dynamics, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and digital modeling for low-emission energy conversion. The research is based at Université Libre de Bruxelles in Brussels, Belgium, with supervision by Professor Alessandro Parente and co-supervision/collaboration with Professor Christian Hasse at TU Darmstadt.

The recruited researcher will be trained for 3 years and enrolled in a 3-year PhD programme. The work includes secondments at TU Darmstadt for computational modelling and at ENGIE for application and techno-economic assessment of hydrogen/ammonia blends for power generation. The broader network offers scientific courses, transferable skills training, networking meetings, and international conferences.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold, or obtain before recruitment, a master’s degree or equivalent in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, energy engineering, aerospace engineering, applied physics, or a closely related field. Strong knowledge of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and combustion is expected, along with good English and motivation for experimental research and quantitative analysis. Experience with combustion experiments, optical diagnostics, instrumentation, data acquisition, scientific programming, or CFD is an advantage. MSCA mobility rules apply: candidates must not already hold a PhD and must not have lived or worked in Belgium for more than 12 months in the 36 months before recruitment.

Funding: gross salary is 4,000 EUR/month, plus a possible 660 EUR/month family supplement if applicable.
