About this position

PhD opportunity in human liver organoid modelling at the Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology in Utrecht, the Netherlands. The project sits in the Artegiani & Hendriks group, a research team focused on building relevant human in vitro models to study disease development and progression, with interests in both the brain and the liver.

This PhD project is centered on human liver biology, with an emphasis on understanding mechanisms of liver function and disease. A key disease context is metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), which can impair liver function and increase the risk of liver cancer. The successful candidate will use human organoids, CRISPR-Cas tools, single-cell RNA sequencing, and advanced imaging approaches to explore how metabolism shapes liver function and disease progression.

The position is a 4-year PhD project funded by a Vidi grant from the Dutch Research Council (NWO). The environment is international and multidisciplinary, and the working language is English. The institute is a research hospital combining healthcare, research, and education in pediatric oncology in one location in Utrecht, offering a strong scientific setting.

Applicants should have recently completed an MSc degree or equivalent and have a background in molecular biology, cell biology, and/or stem cell and developmental biology. Internship experience in competitive institutions is expected. Experience with bioinformatic tools or advanced imaging is a plus. The ideal candidate is highly motivated, committed, able to work independently, and comfortable in an academic research environment.

To apply, prepare an up-to-date CV, a motivation letter of up to two pages, and contact information for 2–3 references. Applications are reviewed as soon as possible and the vacancy remains open until a suitable candidate is found. Deadline: 30 November 2026.
