PhD Position in Human Neuroscience: Neurons and Circuits of Human Cognition Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in Netherlands

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) is inviting applications for a PhD position in Human Neuroscience, focusing on the neurons and circuits underlying human cognition. The successful candidate will join the Neurons of Human Cognition team at the Center for Neurogenetics and Cognitive Research, working under the guidance of leading scientist Natalia Goriounova. This project delves into how specialized brain cells, such as pyramidal neurons and double bouquet cells, contribute to human thinking and their roles in disorders like Alzheimer's disease.

The research involves working with live human brain tissue, utilizing advanced neuroscience techniques including patch-clamp recordings, viral labeling, and computational modeling. Candidates will analyze large datasets, publish and present research globally, and participate in teaching and supervising students. The position offers a rare opportunity to gain expertise in human brain research and collaborate with international experts in a dynamic environment.

Applicants should hold an MSc in Neuroscience, Biomedical Sciences, or Biophysics, with experience in electrophysiology (patch clamp), strong programming and data analysis skills, and a passion for brain research. Additional skills in molecular biology, computational modeling, or big data/statistics are advantageous. The position is fully funded for four years, with a monthly salary of €3,059 – €3,881, paid holidays, bonuses, travel support, and pension benefits. The application deadline is 1 June 2026.
