About this position

TU Delft is advertising a PhD position in Hydrogen-based Novel Flow Battery Technology within the collaborative REDOX BLEND project, a multi-partner Dutch effort to develop next-generation batteries for ultra-long-duration energy storage.

The research focuses on inorganic, hydrogen-based flow batteries, especially the hydrogen-iodine flow battery. The project will investigate alkaline H2-I2 battery configuration, longer-term stability, high power density and energy density, and compare results with other flow battery chemistries developed with academic and industrial partners.

This opportunity is based at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), Faculty of Applied Sciences, and involves collaboration with several Dutch universities and institutes, including RUG, University of Twente, TU Eindhoven, Radboud University Nijmegen, DIFFER, and TNO, as well as industrial partners such as Aquabattery, Elestor, and Ore Energy.

The ideal candidate has a MSc in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, applied chemistry, applied physics, or a similar field, with strong experimental and engineering/process technology skills. The post emphasizes electrochemistry knowledge, laboratory experience, a proactive mindset, excellent academic performance, and fluent English. Dutch is a plus.

The PhD is funded for 4 years. Salary follows the Dutch university collective agreement, starting from €3059 to €3881 gross per month depending on year, plus holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus. TU Delft also mentions health insurance discounts, a monthly work costs contribution, flexible work schedules, and relocation support for those moving to the Netherlands.

Application deadline: 30 August 2026. Applicants should apply online and upload a tailored one-page motivation letter and a detailed CV. Email applications are not accepted.
