About this position
Utrecht University is advertising a PhD position in modelling of turbidity current fluxes in submarine canyons within the Faculty of Geosciences, Department of Earth Sciences, in the Netherlands.
The project is part of DEEP-FLUX (Journey of low-density particles to the DEEP ocean floor – terrestrial organic carbon and microplastics FLUX through submarine canyons). The research focuses on how submarine canyons transport land-derived materials to the deep ocean through turbidity currents, with particular attention to sediment transport modelling, particulate organic carbon, and microplastics. The advertised PhD will mainly develop a computer model for flux quantification and validate it against laboratory experiments.
The team will combine scaled-down lab experiments, model development, and validation on monitored submarine canyons. The project is led by PI Joris Eggenhuisen, and the department offers access to the Earth Simulation Lab and high-performance computing facilities.
Applicants should have an MSc by the start date in Earth Sciences, Physical Geography, Oceanography, Civil or Hydraulic Engineering, or a related field. Experience in sediment transport modelling and coding is required, along with strong communication skills, initiative, teamwork, creativity, curiosity, and good English.
The position is 1.0 FTE, initially for one year and extendable to four years after a successful assessment. Funding includes a gross monthly salary of €3,204–€4,051, plus holiday pay, year-end bonus, pension, and other employment benefits.
Application deadline: 2 October 2026. The position is available from 1 January 2027. Apply online via Utrecht University’s application portal; include a CV and motivation letter. Email applications are not accepted.
