About this position

This PhD position at KTH Royal Institute of Technology focuses on integrating societal impact assessment of transport solutions and policies with travel behavior models, aiming to bridge the traditional gap between these domains through the development of AI-driven integrated assessment frameworks. The research will analyze how technology-driven solutions and policy interventions—such as restrictions on fossil fuel vehicles, reduced car parking, and carpooling promotion—impact sustainability, behavioral adaptation, emission reduction, and equity.

The project combines theory-driven and data-driven modeling, with a strong emphasis on constructing AI systems grounded in behavioral theory. Key indicators like consumer surplus, value of travel time, and demand elasticities will be critically reviewed and incorporated into model development. The use of big data, including traffic sensor data and social media mining, will enhance the analytical depth and real-world relevance of the research.

The successful candidate will collaborate with other doctoral students in the research group, building on existing accessibility indices, agent-based simulation models, and digital twins. Supervision will be provided by Dr. Fariya Sharmeen.

The position offers a dynamic and international research environment, collaboration with industry and leading universities, and a monthly salary according to KTH’s doctoral student salary agreement. The workplace is committed to gender equality, diversity, and a supportive study environment. Applicants must have a relevant master's degree or equivalent, strong English skills, and a background in applied mathematics, transport science, computer science, machine learning, or AI. Programming skills, experience with theory-driven models, and the ability to work in multidisciplinary teams are required.

Quantitative analysis experience and an interest in integrated modelling for complex decision making are highly desirable. The position is full-time for up to four years, with the possibility of limited teaching or administrative duties. Applications must be submitted through KTH’s recruitment system by November 14, 2025, and include a CV, application letter, diplomas, grades, language certificates, and representative publications.

The position is based in Stockholm, Sweden, offering a vibrant academic and living environment.
