About this position

PhD opportunity at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Department of Built Environment, focused on data science, artificial intelligence, housing, child health, public health, and urban systems.

The project investigates how poor housing conditions during pregnancy and early childhood affect children’s health and development, and how housing upgrades can improve outcomes. The research combines big data analysis, computer vision, behavioural modelling, and advanced statistical methods to build predictive models and a digital tool that can help housing providers and municipalities optimize housing interventions for healthier and more equitable homes.

This PhD is part of the NWO-funded Homes for Upcoming Generations programme and is embedded in TU/e’s Urban Systems and Real Estate group. The work is interdisciplinary and involves collaboration with partners at Erasmus Medical Centre, Erasmus University Rotterdam, VU University Amsterdam, as well as housing providers, municipalities, and engineering bureaus.

Eligibility highlights: MSc in exact/data sciences, quantitative economics, or engineering; strong background in calculus, linear algebra, computational modelling, microeconomics, econometrics, operations research, or data science; Python and big-data experience; strong analytical skills; good English; and interest in industry collaboration. Experience at a European research institute or university is an advantage.

Funding and conditions: full-time PhD employment for four years, with an assessment after nine months. Salary follows Dutch university scale P (€3,204–€4,051 gross/month full-time), plus holiday allowance and year-end bonus. The position includes pension, leave, training, and campus benefits.

Location: Eindhoven, Netherlands.

Application: apply online via the TU/e vacancy page. Submit a cover letter, CV with publications, and contact details for three references. The vacancy remains open until filled.
