About this position

The International PhD Programme (IPP) Mainz at the Institute of Molecular Biology in Germany is offering a fully funded PhD position in molecular immunology.

The project, supervised by Johannes Mayer, focuses on modelling myeloid cell activation and exhaustion on a single-cell scale. It investigates circulating myeloid cells such as monocytes, dendritic cells, granulocytes, and their bone marrow progenitors under inflammatory and non-inflammatory conditions. The research aims to understand how these cells reconfigure during local and systemic inflammation, and how cell-cell communication from stromal, endothelial, and lymphoid niches shapes differentiation and function.

The project combines single-cell and multi-omic profiling with trajectory inference and ligand-receptor/network modelling to build a perturbation landscape across myeloid cell types and progenitors. The work includes in silico modelling, in vitro validation, datamining, LLM-based studies, in vitro activation, CRISPR/Cas9 perturbation screening, and in vivo inflammatory models spanning systemic and local inflammation.

This PhD is well suited to candidates with a strong immunology background and experience spanning both wet-lab and dry-lab research at single-cell resolution. A willingness to work with animal models is essential, including experimental handling, design, tissue processing, and analysis. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent, have a good command of English, and provide two letters of reference.

The programme describes itself as an exciting, interdisciplinary, and international environment with advanced training in scientific techniques and professional skills, access to state-of-the-art core facilities, and a lively community of more than 200 PhD students from 44 countries. The position is fully funded and the financing continues until completion of the thesis.
