About this position
PhD student – Molecular microbiology of bacterial biofilms at the Biozentrum, University of Basel (Switzerland).
The research group of Prof. Knut Drescher is seeking a PhD student to study the molecular microbiology of bacterial biofilms. The project focuses on how biofilm communities develop emergent behaviors that do not occur in isolated bacterial cells, with relevance to both basic biology and human infections.
Research topics include bacterial biofilms, transcriptomics, genetics, confocal microscopy, microfluidic growth systems, and infection-related models such as stem-cell-derived organoids and bioengineered tissues. The exact project will be developed together with the supervisor based on the student’s strengths and interests.
The position is fully funded and embedded in a highly interactive, multidisciplinary, international research environment. The PhD student will also join the Swiss NCCR AntiResist consortium and benefit from core facilities, expert support, and a structured PhD program.
Eligibility: applicants must hold a Master’s degree with a research thesis in molecular microbiology. The post is open immediately or by mutual agreement.
Application: submit the application only via the online form linked in the post. Deadline: 15 November 2026. Informal enquiries: [email protected].
