About this position
PhD position at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, working in the Process & Energy department on molecular modeling for hydrogen production processes.
The project focuses on accelerating the development of green and low-carbon hydrogen technologies by generating high-quality thermodynamic, transport, structural, and kinetic data for water electrolysers. The research will use hierarchical molecular simulations to study bulk electrolyte properties, membrane transport, visco-elastic behavior, and the catalyst-ionomer interface for both PEM and AEM electrolysis systems.
This opportunity is especially relevant for students interested in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, chemistry, and materials science, with a strong emphasis on thermodynamics, transport phenomena, and multiscale model development.
Eligibility highlights: an MSc in Mechanical, Chemical, Materials Engineering, Physics, or a related field; strong knowledge of mathematics, physics, chemistry, and thermodynamics; excellent English communication skills; ability to work independently and collaboratively; and a positive attitude. Prior experience with molecular simulation, ab-initio, or macroscale modeling is not required but is a plus.
Funding and conditions: this is a paid PhD employment position for 4 years in principle, with an initial 1.5-year contract and a possible 2.5-year extension. Salary is €3059–€3881 gross/month plus holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus. TU Delft also mentions health insurance discounts and relocation support for moving to the Netherlands.
Application deadline: 20 September 2026. Apply online through the TU Delft careers portal and upload a CV, motivational letter, and BSc/MSc grade list.
