About this position
PhD position in Multisynaptic Plasticity in Dendrites at Radboud University (Faculty of Science, Donders Centre for Neuroscience, Nijmegen, Netherlands).
This PhD project studies neuroscience, especially synaptic plasticity, dendrites, hippocampal CA1 neurons, intracellular signalling, calcium signalling, and the interaction of molecular pathways during simultaneous activation of multiple synapses. The work combines two-photon glutamate uncaging, advanced microscopy, single-cell electrophysiology, and novel biosensors to investigate how plasticity is coordinated within dendrites and how neuromodulators affect these processes.
The project is embedded in the Wierenga lab, which focuses on inhibitory synapses and their interactions with excitatory synapses. Research objectives include determining how calcium release from internal stores contributes to dendritic calcium signals, how PKA and PKC interact with calcium signals, whether these interactions explain two modes of spine growth, and when/where retrograde messengers are produced.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should have a Master's degree in neuroscience, life sciences, biology, biomedical sciences, or a related discipline; interest in optical recording methods and intracellular signalling; experience with microscopy and/or patch-clamp electrophysiology in living brain tissue is preferred; programming skills in Matlab/Python are a plus; fluent English is required.
Funding and conditions: this is a paid PhD employment with a temporary contract (0.8 FTE for 5 years or 1.0 FTE for 4 years), initially 1.5 years with extension after positive evaluation. Salary starts at €3,204 gross/month and rises to €4,051 from year four, plus holiday allowance, end-of-year bonus, and extra leave days.
Application deadline: 8 November 2026. Apply via the online application button and address the letter to Corette Wierenga.
