About this position

Empa, the Swiss research institution in the ETH Domain, is offering a PhD position in nanomedicine at its Laboratory for Biointerfaces and Center for X-ray Analytics in St. Gallen, Switzerland. The project focuses on the quantitative design of lipid-based, multi-cargo nanoparticles for cancer gene delivery, with an emphasis on understanding how nucleic acids can be co-encapsulated and how nanoparticle structure governs delivery performance.

The successful candidate will work at the intersection of nanomaterials, colloid science, analytical science, cellular biology, and bioengineering. The research aims to establish quantitative structure–function relationships for next-generation nucleic-acid delivery systems, using both 2D cell culture and relevant in vitro 3D tissue models. Core methods include nanoparticle formulation, colloidal self-assembly, fluorescence cross-correlation spectroscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering, and cellular/molecular biology assays.

This PhD project is well suited to applicants with a Master’s degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Biophysics, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a related discipline. Strong analytical ability and a quantitative mindset are important, and prior experience with nanoparticle formulation, physicochemical characterization, cell culture, transfection, microscopy, flow cytometry, or advanced scattering/spectroscopy methods is advantageous. Programming and data analysis skills in Python, MATLAB, or R are also beneficial. Proficiency in English is required, while German is a plus.

Empa offers a full-time research appointment for three years, with the possibility of a one-year extension, in an international and stimulating environment with excellent infrastructure and expert mentorship. The role is based in two research groups within Empa’s Bio–Nano Assembly and Cell-/Tissue Materials Interactions teams. The position offers strong training opportunities, access to state-of-the-art facilities, and a platform for publishing and presenting research internationally.
