About this position

PhD position in nanoscale charge transport in electronic materials for advanced nanoelectronic applications at Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH, within the Quantum Nanoscience Division (PGI-3) and the multitip research group.

The project investigates how charge moves through thin films, metallic and semiconducting nanowires, oxide semiconductors, and two-dimensional semiconductors at the nanometer scale. The work combines scanning probe microscopy methods such as AFM, STM, and SEM-enabled nanoprobing with spatially resolved electrical measurements, potentiometry, four-point measurements, and structural/microstructural characterization. A collaboration with IMEC is part of the project, and the research aims to connect structure, defects, interfaces, and transport behavior in materials relevant to next-generation micro- and nanoelectronics.

Study fields / keywords: physics, electrical engineering, materials science, solid-state physics, electronic transport, nanoelectronics, thin films, scanning probe microscopy, potentiometry, quantum materials.

Eligibility highlights: Master’s degree in physics, electrical engineering, or materials science with excellent grades; strong background in solid-state physics and transport phenomena; interest in nanoscale devices and thin-film materials; hands-on experimental mindset; ideally prior AFM/STM/SEM experience; strong English skills at B2 CEFR or higher. German is not required.

Funding: TVöD-Bund pay group 13, at least 65% depending on experience, plus a 75% Christmas bonus and possible additional compensation. The position also includes 30 days of leave and structured doctoral support.

Location: Jülich, Germany.
