About this position
PhD position in Philosophy at the University of Vienna within the FWF-funded project Bodies of Knowledge: Use-Based Expertise Beyond Biomedicine.
The project examines how expertise is produced and negotiated in communities that engage with biomedical technologies, especially steroid hormone use beyond conventional healthcare settings. The doctoral researcher will develop an original PhD project within this broader research agenda, proposing an empirical case study of a community using steroid hormones and connecting it to philosophical questions about expertise, science-society relations, and feminist epistemology.
The position is based at the Department of Philosophy, University of Vienna, and the successful applicant will join a small, collaborative, internationally connected research team. Supervision is by Sophie Juliane Veigl. The doctoral researcher will also be part of the Vienna Doctoral School of Philosophy and the Doctoral Program in Philosophy.
Research activities include participatory research, qualitative empirical methods, interviews, ethnographic fieldwork, document analysis, and collaborative analysis of empirical material. The project encourages engagement with philosophy of science, Science and Technology Studies (STS), feminist epistemology, and related scholarship.
This is a fully funded 4-year PhD opportunity (30 hours/week). The post includes a salary of EUR 3,776.10 gross per month on a full-time basis (14x/year), plus support for conference travel, research visits, workshops, and fieldwork.
