About this position
Are you fascinated by the interaction of light and molecules? The NANOCONFINER project at the University of Amsterdam offers a unique PhD opportunity to explore how nanoconfinement can transform molecular environments and control photophysical behavior. As part of the Molecular Photonics team at the Van 't Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (HIMS), you will push the frontiers of molecular photophysics using state-of-the-art spectroscopic techniques.
Your research will focus on excited-state processes in multichromophoric molecular systems, investigating charge separation, charge transport, and energy-transfer dynamics. The project aims to generate fundamental knowledge for designing next-generation organic materials for energy conversion and light-driven technologies. You will employ advanced methods such as ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy (UV-Vis, IR), time-resolved luminescence (TCSPC, streak camera), and steady-state optical spectroscopy for photophysical characterization.
As a PhD candidate, you will analyze data, present findings at group meetings and conferences, and contribute to scientific publications. You will also assist in teaching undergraduate and master students, and participate in an educational plan including courses and international meetings.
Applicants should have a Master’s degree (completed or near completion) in physical chemistry, chemical physics, or a closely related field. Essential qualifications include a strong background in spectroscopy, photochemistry, or excited-state dynamics; experience with time-resolved spectroscopic techniques; scientific data processing and analysis skills; basic programming skills (Python or MATLAB); and excellent English communication. The ideal candidate is curious, hands-on, and enthusiastic about photophysical phenomena.
The position offers a temporary contract for 38 hours per week over 4 years (initially 18 months, extended upon satisfactory evaluation). The gross monthly salary ranges from €3,059 (first year) to €3,881 (last year), with additional holiday and year-end allowances. Non-Dutch applicants may benefit from the '30% ruling' tax agreement. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities applies, providing pension contributions, paid parental leave, birth leave, flexible work arrangements, and access to professional development courses.
HIMS is one of eight institutes within the Faculty of Science at the University of Amsterdam, recognized for internationally driven chemistry and molecular research. The research environment is highly collaborative, with opportunities to work alongside experts in photochemistry, spectroscopy, supramolecular chemistry, and materials science. The Faculty of Science hosts around 8,000 students and 1,800 staff, fostering a vibrant academic community.
