About this position
PhD opportunity at Forschungszentrum Jülich (IBG-2, Plant Sciences) in Germany. The project is part of the PhenoRob – Robotics and Phenotyping for Sustainable Crop Production – research environment and focuses on linking above-ground plant function to hidden root dynamics.
The doctoral researcher will study how photosynthesis, carbon allocation, shoot development, and root growth are connected over time, and how these relationships change under different environmental conditions. The work combines controlled-environment experiments with field experiments and uses non-invasive and advanced imaging approaches such as MRI and PET, together with physiological measurements and sensor-based phenotyping.
Research themes and keywords: plant phenotyping, root biology, plant physiology, photosynthetic carbon assimilation, carbon allocation, source-sink dynamics, field phenotyping, imaging, data analysis, statistics, plant modelling, functional-structural plant models.
What you will do: design and conduct plant experiments; quantify temporal changes in plant structure and function; investigate relationships between above-ground traits and root development; develop quantitative approaches to connect root responses with above-ground measurements; contribute data to model parameterisation and validation; present at conferences and publish in journals.
Eligibility highlights: an excellent Master’s degree in plant sciences, biology, agricultural sciences, crop science, environmental sciences, bioengineering or a related field; strong motivation for experimental and quantitative plant science; experience with statistics and data analysis; good English at B2 level or higher. Experience with R/Python, photosynthesis measurements, root phenotyping, MRI/PET, remote sensing, image analysis, machine learning, or plant modelling is beneficial.
Funding: the position is paid at pay group 13 (70%) TVöD-Bund.
Location: Jülich, Germany. Start: as soon as possible.
Application: apply online through the Forschungszentrum Jülich career portal and consult the application information/FAQ links for details. Questions can be sent to [email protected].

What's required
Excellent Master's degree in plant sciences, biology, agricultural sciences, crop science, environmental sciences, bioengineering or a related discipline. Motivation to combine controlled experiments with field-based plant research is required, along with interest in linking physiological processes with imaging and sensor-derived plant traits. Experience in quantitative data analysis and statistics is expected; R, Python or comparable tools are advantageous. Very good written and spoken English is required at least at B2 level according to CEFR, ideally supported by a certificate. Experience with photosynthesis measurements, root phenotyping, plant imaging, MRI, PET, field phenotyping, remote sensing, image analysis, machine learning or plant modelling is an advantage but not mandatory.
