About this position

Ghent University’s Department of Applied Physics invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in the Research Unit Plasma Technology (RUPT). This interdisciplinary project focuses on the plasma-assisted development of advanced tissue engineering scaffolds, with a special emphasis on next-generation plasma-treated hydrogels for selective cancer therapy. The research aims to harness cold plasma technology to tailor surface chemistry and morphology, introduce bioactive functionalities, and create innovative scaffolds that support cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation.

The successful candidate will operate and optimize non-thermal plasma systems for hydrogel modification, develop RONS-loaded plasma-treated hydrogels, and perform advanced material and surface characterization using techniques such as XPS, FTIR, SEM, and AFM. Biological evaluation will be conducted in collaboration with biomedical partners at Ghent University and Hasselt University’s BIOMED Institute, providing a unique opportunity to work at the interface of plasma science, materials engineering, and regenerative medicine.

Key responsibilities include analyzing data, translating findings into scientific insights, preparing publications, presenting at international conferences, and contributing to the scientific activities of the research group. The position also involves assisting in student supervision and supporting teaching activities.

Applicants should hold or be in the final year of a Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical Sciences, Chemistry, (Applied) Physics, Engineering, or Materials Engineering. Strong academic results, motivation for experimental and interdisciplinary research, and excellent English communication skills are required. Experience with cell culture and/or hydrogels is an asset but not mandatory.

The position offers a full-time doctoral fellowship for up to 48 months, with a salary at 100% of the net AAP member rate, tax-free, and determined by family status and seniority. Additional benefits include extensive training opportunities, 36 days of annual leave, bicycle allowance, eco vouchers, and access to state-of-the-art research facilities. The contract will start no later than October 1st, 2026.

To apply, submit a single PDF containing a motivation letter, detailed CV with academic results, contact information for two referees, and optionally your MSc thesis or relevant publications. Applications should be sent to [email protected] by February 28th, 2026, with the subject line: “PhD Application – Plasma-Treated Hydrogels”. For further information, contact Karen Leus at the same email address.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a dynamic, internationally recognized research environment and contribute to cutting-edge developments in plasma technology, biomaterials, and cancer therapy.
