About this position
PhD Position (m/f/d) in the group of Jun.-Prof. Frederik Haase at the Institute of Chemistry, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU), Halle (Saale), Germany.
The project focuses on the water-based assembly of covalent materials, especially covalent organic frameworks (COFs). The research aims to understand how assembly and disassembly can be guided so that structures with desired properties can be created on demand. A major scientific goal is to move COF assembly into water, which could open routes toward biological and medical applications. The work combines multistep organic synthesis with materials characterization and will involve linker design for aqueous COF formation.
Research activities include preparation and characterization of water-based COFs, multistep synthesis of functional organic linker molecules, solvothermal synthesis, and organic materials synthesis. Characterization techniques mentioned for the project are PXRD, solid-state NMR, FTIR, and TEM. The position also includes writing scientific manuscripts, contributing to research grant proposals, and teaching duties.
The position is in a young, growing research group with a friendly and supportive atmosphere, strong independence for the doctoral researcher, and excellent research facilities. The working language is English, and the lab brings together people from different backgrounds and countries.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should have a completed or soon-to-be completed MSc in Chemistry or an equivalent degree, with demonstrable experience in multistep organic synthesis or synthetic polymer chemistry, experience in characterizing organic materials or polymers, and excellent written and spoken English.
Funding and terms: this is a 50% PhD position under TV-L E13, fixed-term for 3 years. Gross monthly salary is approximately €2,380–€2,680 depending on prior experience, plus annual special payment and social benefits under German public service regulations.
Application deadline: 2026-11-04 at 12:00 (Europe/Berlin). Applications should be submitted as a single PDF by email to [email protected], including a cover letter and CV, and quoting reference number Reg.-Nr. 5-4229/26-H.
Location: Halle (Saale), Germany, at the Heide Campus of MLU. The city is centrally located with easy rail access to Berlin and Leipzig.
