About this position

PhD opportunity in Rain-on-Snow Hydrology and Stable Water Isotopes at the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague (Faculty of Environmental Sciences), within the international CryoSCOPE Horizon Europe project.

The project studies how rain-on-snow events affect snowpack water storage and release, runoff timing, floods, wet-snow hazards, and water resources. The research combines hydrology, stable water isotopes (oxygen and hydrogen), snow and runoff monitoring, and field-based analysis across alpine, boreal, and temperate montane catchments.

The PhD candidate will join a collaborative European network including ETH Zurich, WSL-SLF Davos, the University of Oulu, the Finnish Meteorological Institute, and other partners. Work is based in Prague with international fieldwork and research stays.

Main tasks include winter/spring field campaigns in Czechia and abroad, installation and operation of snow/hydrometeorological/runoff equipment, sampling rainfall, snowmelt, and runoff for isotope analysis, and processing datasets using Python, R, or similar tools. The project also involves publications, conference presentations, and doctoral thesis work.

Eligibility highlights: a Master's degree in hydrology, environmental sciences, physical geography, geosciences, water management, meteorology, or a related field; strong analytical skills; independence; motivation for fieldwork; good English; teamwork in an international setting; experience with quantitative data and Python/R/GIS preferred; ability to work in cold, wet, mountainous conditions; and a Category B driving licence. No prior isotope experience is required because training is provided.

Funding and support: this is a 4-year PhD position in a major Horizon Europe project, with access to instrumentation, isotope labs, AI-assisted research tools, international training, conferences, and close supervision. The post does not state a stipend amount or tuition waiver.
