Description

Luleå University of Technology, a leading institution in Sweden, is offering a PhD position in the Robotics and Artificial Intelligence (RAI) group within the Department of Computer Science and Electrical and Space Engineering. The university is renowned for its innovative education and ground-breaking research, particularly in the Arctic region, and is actively involved in major projects aimed at creating a fossil-free society. The RAI team specializes in fundamental and applied research across all aspects of robotics, with particular emphasis on aerial, space, and bioinspired robotics. The group’s vision is to bridge the gap between theoretical advances and real-world applications, leveraging strong expertise in field robotics and participating in numerous European and national RDI projects. The PhD project focuses on robotic autonomy and communication networks, with research areas including 5G/6G connectivity, control of communication networks, Markovian processes, network-based localization, adaptive bandwidth, mesh networking, wireless sensor networks, edge computing, time-delayed systems, and adaptive queuing. Application areas include robotics for mining, aerial inspection of infrastructure, multi-robotic search and rescue, multi-sensor fusion, and multi-robot coordination. The position involves both theoretical and experimental research, with expectations to publish in major international journals and conferences. Additional duties may include supervising MSc students, assisting with grant applications, and supporting teaching activities. The successful candidate will work closely with national, European, and global R&D projects. Applicants must hold an MSc degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Agricultural Engineering, or a related field, and demonstrate excellent scientific and experimental skills, strong communication abilities, and fluency in English. The position is based in Luleå, Sweden, and is funded as a salaried PhD student appointment for four years, with possible teaching duties up to 20%. Applications should include a CV, motivation letter, contact details for two referees, and verified diplomas in Swedish or English. The deadline for applications is November 30, 2025.
