About this position

Tu/e is offering a PhD position in robust multi-criteria optical design under uncertainty within the Computational Illumination Optics group in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, part of CASA (Centre for Applied Analysis, Scientific Computing and Applications). The project sits at the interface of applied mathematics, numerical optimization, optical design, and uncertainty quantification.

The research aims to develop mathematical models and numerical algorithms that incorporate uncertainties into the design of imaging optical systems. In particular, the project focuses on inverse freeform design for optics, robust optimization, and the analysis of trade-offs between multiple performance criteria. The methods under investigation include spectral uncertainty quantification techniques such as polynomial chaos expansions, with an emphasis on robust multi-criteria formulations based on Pareto losses.

The scientific target is to enable optical design strategies that remain reliable under manufacturing tolerances, alignment errors, material variability, and other perturbations. The application area is imaging optics, with a specific focus on telescopic systems. The project will address nonlinear partial or ordinary differential equations arising from inverse design problems and explore how uncertainty affects competing criteria such as image quality, manufacturability, and cost.

The PhD candidate will work on research tasks including uncertainty quantification in inverse freeform design, development and implementation of robust design strategies, and application of the methods to imaging systems. The role also includes analysing and interpreting results, publishing and presenting research, and participating in seminars, workshops, and teaching activities.

The position is hosted by the Computational Illumination Optics group, an applied mathematics team with strong links to industry-relevant applications and partners such as Signify, ASML, and TNO. The broader environment at TU/e and CASA offers a collaborative research atmosphere and connections to the Brainport Eindhoven high-tech ecosystem.

Applicants should have a master’s degree in applied mathematics or a closely related field, and should bring experience in mathematical modeling, optimization, scientific computing, and programming. Strong analytical ability, an interdisciplinary mindset, and the motivation to contribute to teaching are also expected. Fluency in spoken and written English at C1 level is required.

The appointment is full-time for four years, with an intermediate assessment after nine months. The salary is in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, scale P, with a gross monthly base salary between €3,204 and €4,051 for a full-time appointment. In addition, the position includes an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus, together with standard TU/e employment benefits including pension coverage, training opportunities, commuting and home-working allowances, and access to campus facilities.
