Description

Utrecht University is offering a fully funded PhD position focused on scalable offshore floating photovoltaic (PV) systems. The project aims to develop robust, physics-based models to predict and optimize the performance of floating PV systems under real offshore conditions, including wave dynamics, albedo effects, and system heat transfer. The research will also explore hybrid renewable energy setups, such as combining offshore PV with wind and storage, particularly in the North Sea context. The successful candidate will build a digital library of validated offshore FPV components and environmental datasets, investigate grid connection options, and develop optimization algorithms for techno-economic feasibility. The position is based in the Department of Sustainable Development, Faculty of Geosciences, and offers access to excellent resources, collaborations with industry and international networks, and participation in Utrecht University’s doctoral training and professional development programs. Applicants should have a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or Energy Science, with strong skills in modelling, simulation, and programming (Python, MATLAB). Experience with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and a willingness to learn new tools are important. The position offers a gross monthly salary between €3,059 and €3,881, plus holiday and year-end bonuses, pension, and flexible employment terms. The application deadline is 30 November 2025. For more information, contact Dr Sara Golroodbari or Professor Madeleine Gibescu at Utrecht University.

Funding

The position is fully funded for four years, with an initial one-year contract extendable to four years upon successful assessment. The gross monthly salary ranges from €3,059 to €3,881 (salary scale P, CAO NU), plus 8% holiday pay and 8.3% year-end bonus. Additional benefits include a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave, flexible employment terms, and professional development opportunities.

How to apply

Submit your application via the Utrecht University 'apply now' button. Include a motivation letter, CV, academic transcripts, and contact information for two referees. Ensure your application is complete before the 30 November 2025 deadline.

Requirements

Applicants must have a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or Energy Science, with a strong analytical background in mathematics and physics. Experience in modelling and simulation of PV systems or other offshore renewable energy technologies, hydrodynamic and fluid dynamic systems, and programming or numerical modelling (e.g., Python, MATLAB) is required. Familiarity with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software such as COMSOL or Autodesk CFD, or willingness to learn, is expected. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary, international team are essential.
