About this position

PhD position at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, on the effect of tramp elements in martensitic stainless steels. The project focuses on materials science, metallurgy, microstructure development, microstructural characterization, and the role of impurity elements in recycled steel loops.

You will investigate which tramp elements are most critical for martensitic stainless steels, where they originate from, how they accumulate during recycling, and how they influence microstructure evolution, processing behaviour, and material performance. The project also explores possible mitigation strategies to reduce negative effects and support more sustainable steel production.

The position is embedded in an academic environment with collaboration with industrial partners. The candidate may also contribute to the academic community through discussions, co-supervision of students, and guest lectures.

Eligibility highlights: MSc degree in materials science or a related field such as solid-state physics or materials engineering; strong background in metal science; experience with microstructural characterization; excellent English; strong communication, problem-solving, and scientific writing skills; willingness to work in an international multidisciplinary academic-industrial team.

Funding: 4-year doctoral employment in principle, with salary from €3059 to €3881 gross per month, plus holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus. TU Delft also mentions health insurance discounts and a monthly work costs contribution.

Deadline: apply by 23 August 2026 via the online application button. Upload a motivation letter, CV, and bachelor’s/master’s transcripts. Applications by email or post are not processed.
