About this position

The Department of Forest Ecology and Management at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) invites applications for a PhD position focused on soil protein composition and nitrogen cycling in boreal forests. Nitrogen availability is a major constraint on plant growth and carbon sequestration in these ecosystems, and proteins constitute a significant fraction of the soil nitrogen pool. However, the processes governing their breakdown into amino acids and their role in nitrogen cycling remain poorly understood. This doctoral project aims to address these knowledge gaps by characterizing soil protein composition and investigating the mechanisms controlling nitrogen turnover.

The successful candidate will primarily conduct laboratory analyses of natural soils collected from mesocosm and field experiments. Analytical work will be performed in close collaboration with the Umeå Proteomics Platform, providing access to advanced proteomics technologies. The project is led by Dr. Sandra Jämtgård, in collaboration with Dr. Maja Sundquist and Dr. Jonatan Klaminder, and the candidate will join a multidisciplinary research team with expertise in plant ecophysiology, vegetation ecology, soil science, and proteomics. This environment offers excellent opportunities for scientific exchange and professional development.

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent, with at least 240 credits (including 60 at second-cycle level) in biology or a related subject. Specific requirements include at least 90 HEC in biology-related subjects, with at least 30 at second-cycle level. English proficiency equivalent to Swedish upper-secondary qualification Engelska B/6 is required. Candidates should have documented experience with laboratory work, univariate and multivariate analysis, and demonstrate strong cooperation, problem-solving, analytical skills, and the ability to work independently. Merits include experience in proteomics analysis, LC-MS/MS, protein chemistry, and bioinformatic data analysis.

The PhD student will be employed at the Department of Forest Ecology and Management, which comprises around 115 staff members, including 9 professors. The department’s mission is to advance the understanding of forest ecosystems and their management for sustainable development. SLU offers a supportive and inclusive work environment, with campuses in Alnarp, Umeå, and Uppsala, and operates research stations and teaching sites throughout Sweden.

This is a fully funded, 4-year doctoral position with salary progression fixed by local collective agreement. The position is based in Umeå and is full-time. The anticipated start date is during autumn 2026, according to agreement. The application deadline is 20 August 2026. Selection among eligible applicants is based on the submitted documents and the applicant’s ability to complete the programme within the allotted time.
