About this position

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) is offering a fully funded PhD position in the development of spectral sensors for additive manufacturing, based at the Brussels Photonics research group within the Faculty of Engineering. The project is part of the FWO-funded GRADΞD initiative, focusing on Functionally Graded Additive Metals (FGAM) and their potential for creating components with spatially controlled material properties. The main goal is to develop a multi-modal spectroscopic sensing system for in-situ, real-time monitoring of the meltpool during additive manufacturing, enabling precise process control of functionally graded materials. The research will involve conducting spectroscopic measurements using Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and Raman spectroscopy, developing a miniaturized laboratory setup for combined LIBS and Raman analysis, and applying advanced machine learning techniques to process spectroscopic data. The project also includes the optical design and development of custom spectroscopic sensors utilizing freeform optics, and integrating the sensing unit into the additive manufacturing workflow. The position is supervised by Prof. Heidi Ottevaere and Prof. Lien Smeesters, and offers a dynamic, diverse, and supportive research environment. Candidates should have a master's degree in physics, photonics, applied mathematics, electrical engineering, or a related field, with strong interest in photonic systems and light technology. Experience with optical spectroscopy, experimental setups, lasers, spectrometers, fiber optics, and programming (Matlab, Python) is highly valued. Training in specific skills can be provided during the first year. Proficiency in English (CEFR C1) is required, and candidates should be prepared to travel for conferences or research stays. The scholarship is initially for 12 months, extendable up to 48 months based on performance, and includes a grant according to government scales, telework allowance, hospitalisation insurance, public transport reimbursement, campus restaurant discounts, sports facilities, and more. Interest in photonic systems and light technology is required. Familiarity with numerical techniques and simulation methods (ANSYS Zemax OpticsStudio) is advantageous.
