PhD Position in Structural Biology of Kinases Using Cryo-EM Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Belgium

PhD opportunity in structural biology of kinases using cryo-EM at the VIB Center for Structural Biology, hosted at Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Brussels, Belgium.

The selected candidate will join the Efremov Lab as part of the newly funded ANA-KIN Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network. The project focuses on uncovering new principles of kinase regulation, with an emphasis on protein structure, dynamics, conformational landscapes, and regulatory interfaces. The work combines state-of-the-art cryo-electron microscopy, protein biochemistry, molecular biology, and integrative structural/functional analysis.

This PhD sits at the intersection of structural biology, biophysics, biochemistry, and drug discovery. Protein kinases are key signaling proteins and major drug targets, yet many mechanisms of regulation remain unresolved. The project aims to characterize kinase complexes and understand allosteric and non-catalytic regulation, contributing to fundamental biology and future therapeutic strategies.

The host environment includes the internationally recognized VIB Center for Structural Biology (VIB-CSB) and access to the Brussels Electron Microscopy Center (BECM), a world-class cryo-EM facility with instrumentation for single-particle analysis and cryo-electron tomography. The lab works on membrane protein complexes and develops innovative cryo-EM sample-preparation methods, offering a strong training environment in modern structural biology.

As part of the ANA-KIN Doctoral Network, doctoral researchers will benefit from international secondments, workshops and conferences, industrial and academic exposure, and transferable-skills training in communication, leadership, entrepreneurship, and innovation. The position is therefore ideal for a highly motivated candidate seeking both technical depth and broad European research experience.

Eligibility: a Master's degree or equivalent in a relevant field such as Structural Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biophysics, or Biotechnology is required. Candidates should have a strong academic record and practical experience in cryo-EM, protein purification, or kinase biology. Excellent English and the ability to work independently and collaboratively are expected. In line with MSCA mobility rules, applicants must not have lived or carried out their main activity in Belgium for more than 12 months in the 36 months before recruitment.

Funding: This is a fully funded PhD with a competitive MSCA salary, including mobility, family (where applicable), and travel allowances.
