About this position

PhD position at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in methanogenic microbiomes, anaerobic microbiomes, microbial ecology, microbiology, biotechnology, and bioprocess modeling.

This project aims to unravel structure-function relationships in anaerobic microbiomes, with a focus on how different microorganisms cooperate to drive product formation pathways in systems such as food fermentations, the intestinal tract, and waste bioprocessing in anaerobic digestors. The work combines laboratory bioreactor experiments with data processing and process modeling to build a quantitative description of the process and the roles of different microbial guilds.

The project uses an experimental infrastructure called UNLOCK for parallelized, high-resolution phenotypic characterization of microbiomes in bioreactors, together with genotypic characterization in collaboration with partners in Wageningen. The position is hosted by the Faculty of Applied Sciences at TU Delft.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should have an MSc in life sciences, biotechnology, microbial ecology, or microbiology, plus a strong affinity for laboratory work and computational procedures. A strong background in data analysis and bioprocess modeling is desirable. English proficiency is required according to TU Delft Graduate School standards.

Funding and employment: this is a paid doctoral employment position for 4 years in principle, with an initial 1.5-year contract followed by a 2.5-year contract subject to a go/no-go assessment. Salary ranges from €3059 to €3881 gross per month (full-time), plus 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus. Health insurance discounts and a monthly work costs contribution are also mentioned.

Application deadline: 16 August 2026. Apply online with a CV and motivational letter via the application button. Applications sent by email or post will not be processed.
