About this position
The Industrial Systems Institute (ISI), a member of the ATHENA Research and Innovation Center in Patras, Greece, is offering a fully funded PhD position in swarm-computing algorithms for computational resource scheduling in 6G networks. This opportunity is part of the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Doctoral Network NEWTON, funded by Horizon Europe, which brings together nine leading EU academic and private sector partners to advance converged wireless-optical network architectures. The NEWTON project aims to develop efficient 6G Cell-Free (CF)-based access networks for high-density and high-coverage deployments, leveraging novel solutions for both radio-edge and regional-edge domains, as well as innovative network-management approaches.
The successful candidate will develop an individual research project focused on designing and implementing swarm-computing algorithms to optimize computational resource allocation in 6G networks. Key objectives include building knowledge graphs to model the cloud edge continuum for workload inference and developing decentralized algorithms for improved resource allocation in network data centers. The expected outcome is the creation of advanced, decentralized swarm-computing methods that enhance the utilization of computational resources in next-generation networks.
The position offers a three-year, full-time contract with a competitive salary of approximately 40,000€/year (gross), which may be supplemented with a family allowance in accordance with MSCA guidelines. The doctoral candidate will be enrolled in a PhD program and will participate in a secondment of up to six months at Iquadrat Informatica S.L. in Barcelona, Spain, as an integral part of the contract. Additional benefits include training in academic writing, opportunities to present research at workshops, plenary meetings, and international conferences, participation in secondments to consortium partners, and involvement in the supervision of undergraduate students.
Eligibility criteria require candidates to hold a master's degree or equivalent in electrical, electronics, telecommunications, photonics engineering, computer science, or a related field. Applicants must demonstrate a good command of English and must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Greece for more than 12 months during the last three years prior to recruitment. Candidates should not already possess a PhD degree. Applications must include a presentation letter, curriculum vitae, master and bachelor diplomas (combined in a single file), and master and bachelor grade transcripts (combined in a single file).
To apply, candidates should submit their application by May 31st, 2026 via the online portal at https://cv.newton-6g.eu/. Incorporations will begin as of May 2026. For further information about the NEWTON project and the Industrial Systems Institute, visit https://newton-6g.eu/ and https://www.isi.gr/. The position is based in Patras, Greece, at the Patras Science Park building.
This PhD position provides an excellent opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in communication engineering, computational resource management, and 6G network technologies, within a vibrant European research network and under attractive employment conditions.
