PhD Position in Synthetic Immunology and Epigenetic Remodeling of Innate Immune Memory Heidelberg University in Germany

The Department of Integrative Virology at the Center for Integrative Infectious Disease Research (CIID), Heidelberg University, is offering a PhD position in the laboratory of Dr. Lercher, as part of the SynthImmune Cluster of Excellence. This interdisciplinary cluster unites leading groups in virology, cancer, immunology, and bioengineering to advance the principles of immune control and develop novel therapeutics based on synthetic immunology.

The project investigates how cells integrate distinct inflammatory signals and how this integration leads to durable epigenetic remodeling, focusing on antigen-independent innate immune memory. The PhD candidate will study molecular networks of inflammatory signal integration and their impact on epigenetic changes across primary macrophage populations. The research employs advanced cell culture models and state-of-the-art techniques, including transcriptomics, epigenomics, metabolomics, flow cytometry, and imaging, to model real-world pathogen encounters and the establishment and plasticity of innate immune memory.

Identified molecular targets will be validated through genetic (CRISPR/Cas9, shRNA) and pharmacological (small molecules) perturbation in both cell culture and animal models of viral infection. The project aims to deepen understanding of the long-term consequences of inflammatory responses and unlock the therapeutic potential of innate immune memory.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in biology, molecular biology, immunology, cell biology, or a related field from an internationally accredited institution. Essential qualifications include strong theoretical knowledge in molecular biology and related methods. Experience in immunology, bioinformatics, and high-throughput sequencing is advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate a high interest in fundamental immunology questions and be willing to establish and optimize novel model systems. Fluency in English (written and spoken) is required. A valid measles immunity certificate is mandatory for employment.
