About this position

PhD position open in Synthetic Organic & Organometallic Chemistry at the University of Amsterdam, within the Van 't Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (HIMS) and the Fernández Ibáñez Research Group.

This newly funded NWO PhD project focuses on developing innovative palladium-catalysed C–H activation and cascade reactions for the rapid construction of complex molecular ring systems. The research sits at the interface of synthetic organic chemistry, organometallic catalysis, ligand design, and reaction mechanisms, with applications in pharmaceutical and fine chemical synthesis.

The PhD researcher will develop novel Pd-catalysed transformations, design and synthesize ligands and catalysts, conduct mechanistic investigations, and analyze reactions using NMR, GC-MS, and HPLC. The role also includes publishing in scientific journals and presenting at international conferences.

Eligibility highlights: a Master's degree in Chemistry (or near completion), strong background in organic chemistry, organometallic chemistry, or catalysis, hands-on synthetic laboratory experience, strong English communication skills, and interest in reaction mechanism and method development. Familiarity with modern analytical techniques is desirable.

Funding and conditions: 4-year PhD appointment; gross monthly salary €3,059–€3,881 (Scale P), excluding holiday and year-end allowances; 232 holiday hours per year; training, conferences, professional development, hybrid working possibilities, and pension contributions.

Deadline: 1 August 2026. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so early submission is recommended.

How to apply: use the application button on the vacancy page and submit before the deadline. For questions, contact Prof. Dr. M.A. (Tati) Fernández-Ibáñez at the listed email address.
