PhD Position in Toxicology at ETH Zurich

The Laboratory of Toxicology at ETH Zurich’s Department of Health Sciences and Technology is seeking a motivated PhD student to start in late 2026 or early 2027. The project focuses on genomic biomarkers of health and disease, with an emphasis on UV-induced skin aging, DNA damage, genome instability, and biomarker technologies for prevention.

Research in the group combines quantitative chemical, in vitro, and computational approaches to understand how bioactive chemicals influence food, drug, and personal care product safety and function. The PhD project builds on newly established bioanalysis tools that map DNA damage at single-base resolution and integrates multi-omic approaches to study DNA damage in the context of genome organization and function.

In this project, you will use DNA sequencing and related methods to characterize cellular responses to stress and to interventions, then integrate these data with gene expression, DNA methylation, and related molecular features using bioinformatics. The broader aim is to uncover biomarkers of aging driven by DNA damage and to mechanistically dissect the role of DNA damage in aging and disease using clinically relevant biological material.

Applicants should have, or expect to obtain before starting, an MSc or equivalent in Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Toxicology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Food Science, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, or a closely related field. Strong English communication skills, a self-directed mindset, leadership potential, and relevant hands-on laboratory experience are expected. Bioinformatics experience is helpful, and candidates with a strong background in nucleic acid chemical biology, genomic sequencing, or in vitro toxicology are particularly encouraged.
