About this position
Radboud University is advertising a PhD position in Transcranial Ultrasound Stimulation and Computational Affective Neuroscience within the Faculty of Social Sciences, embedded in the Affective Neuroscience group led by Prof. Karin Roelofs. The project is part of the ERC Advanced Grant HEART2ADAPT and focuses on how stress and autonomic state shape approach-avoidance decisions under threat.
The PhD will combine cognitive neuroscience, affective neuroscience, computational modelling, neuroimaging, and non-invasive neuromodulation. A key part of the project is testing causal mechanisms using transcranial ultrasound stimulation (TUS), including offline TUS and development of MR-compatible online TUS. The work will involve protocol development, data collection, and computational analysis of behavioural and neural data, with target regions including the amygdala, ventral striatum, and dorsal ACC.
The position is based at the Donders Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging and involves collaboration with the Behavioural Science Institute and international partners. The environment is strongly interdisciplinary and research-intensive, with access to advanced MRI, MEG, EEG-TMS/TUS, and computational facilities.
Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree in cognitive neuroscience or a related field; strong interest in cognitive/affective neuroscience and computational psychiatry; experience with fMRI or MEG analysis; familiarity with Matlab, Python, SPM, FSL, or FieldTrip; experience or willingness to learn TUS; and experience with peripheral psychophysiological data is preferred. Strong English communication, organisation, and teamwork skills are expected.
Funding: this is a paid PhD employment contract, funded by the ERC Advanced Grant HEART2ADAPT. Salary starts at €3,204 gross per month and increases to €4,051 from year four, plus holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus.
Application deadline: 9 November 2026. Apply through the Radboud University vacancy page and address the letter to Karin Roelofs.

What's required
Applicants should have a Master’s degree in cognitive neuroscience or a closely related field such as psychology, biology, biomedical sciences, computer science, or another relevant MSc. Strong interest in fundamental research in cognitive and affective neuroscience and computational psychiatry is required. Experience with fMRI acquisition and analysis using Matlab, Python, SPM, FSL or similar tools, or experience with MEG acquisition and analysis using FieldTrip or similar software, is expected. Experience in non-invasive neuromodulation, preferably transcranial ultrasound stimulation, is preferred or the candidate must be willing to learn it. Experience with peripheral psychophysiological data acquisition and analysis is also desired. Candidates should be able to work in an interdisciplinary translational environment, communicate well in academia, be proactive, organised, and fluent in written and spoken English.
How to apply
Apply only via the university application button/portal on the vacancy page. Address the application letter to Karin Roelofs and include the documents requested in the application form. Submit before 9 November 2026.
