About this position

Microplastics in the aquatic environment are a growing concern due to their negative impacts on marine life and human health. With an estimated 2.7 million tonnes released annually—a figure expected to double by 2040—understanding the transport and fate of microplastics is crucial. These particles, ranging from a few microns to millimetres and composed of materials such as polyethylene, polypropylene, and nylon, present significant challenges for environmental scientists and engineers.

This PhD project at The University of Manchester aims to deliver unique insights into the transportation of microplastics in aquatic environments using advanced laser diagnostic tools. The research will focus on implementing 3D measurements to better understand the spatial evolution of microplastics in complex environmental flows. Experiments will be conducted in the state-of-the-art flumes at the University of Manchester Hydrodynamics Lab, providing hands-on experience with cutting-edge facilities.

The project is supervised by Dr K Rajamanickam and Dr S Draycott in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. It is ideally suited for candidates with a strong foundation in fluid mechanics, basic programming skills (e.g., MATLAB, Python), and an interest in experimental techniques. Applicants should hold, or expect to achieve, at least a 2.1 honours degree or a master’s (or international equivalent) in a relevant science or engineering discipline.

Excellent candidates will be nominated for competence-based faculty funding, which covers tuition fees and provides a tax-free stipend based on the UKRI rate (£20,780 for 2025/26, with expected annual increases). The PhD duration is 4 years. Self-funded students are also welcome to apply.
