About this position

This ERC-funded PhD position at Wageningen University & Research offers an exciting opportunity to investigate the mechanisms of cytoplasmic inheritance in plants. As a PhD candidate, you will join the newly established Cytoplasmic Genetics Group within the Laboratory of Plant Physiology. You will work closely with the group leader, Dr Kin Pan Chung, and collaborate with fellow PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers. The Plant Science Group at Wageningen University & Research provides a vibrant, multidisciplinary environment at the intersection of biology, chemistry, and physics, with extensive opportunities for training and collaboration.

Your research will involve investigating plastid and mitochondrial inheritance in Arabidopsis thaliana, utilizing a broad range of techniques in genetics, molecular biology, and microscopy. You will also assist in supervising and mentoring Bachelor’s and Master’s students, and participate in workshops and conferences to present your work and further your development as a researcher.

The project leverages recent breakthroughs in cytoplasmic genetics, offering powerful new tools to address long-standing questions about maternal inheritance. Insights gained from this research have the potential to drive innovative applications in agriculture and plant breeding, such as creating plants with novel inheritance patterns for improved traits.

Funding for this position is provided by the European Research Council (ERC), covering a full stipend and research expenses. Applicants should have a strong background in genetics, molecular biology, or plant sciences, and be enthusiastic about contributing to multidisciplinary research. Proficiency in English is required, and experience with laboratory techniques and microscopy is desirable.
