About this position
The Plant Chromatin Organization and Function Group at the Institute of Experimental Botany (IEB), Czechia, is offering a PhD position focused on barley reproductive biology, polyploidy, and seed development. The research aims to unravel the genetic and developmental consequences of ploidy transitions in barley seeds, particularly addressing why new polyploids like barley often exhibit poor seed viability. The project will dissect how ploidy changes affect barley seed formation, with a strong focus on the embryo and endosperm, and will identify critical developmental checkpoints disrupted by ploidy transitions.
The successful candidate will establish an experimental framework for comparative analyses of seed development across diploid, triploid, and tetraploid backgrounds, including the development of a triploid inducer line and generation of stable tetraploid barley lines. A central outcome will be a cytological and developmental atlas of seed formation based on existing and newly generated marker lines. The project will utilize advanced techniques such as flow cytometry for ploidy verification, CRISPR/Cas for genome editing, and live-cell microscopy for visualizing chromosome behavior and cell-type-specific changes, including AI-assisted image analysis.
Applicants should hold an MSc or equivalent in plant biology, genetics, or biotechnology. Experience in microscopy, genetics, or related fields is preferred, and skills in data visualization, scientific writing, and critical thinking are advantageous. The position offers a competitive salary according to IEB CAS rules, social and health insurance, and 25 days of vacation. The expected start date is 1 September 2026, and the position will remain open until filled.
To apply, candidates should send a CV and a brief motivation letter (PDF) to [email protected] with the subject 'Ph.D. Seed development'. Only selected candidates will be contacted for interviews. For more information about the group and research topics, visit the group website or follow on X and Bluesky.
