PhD Position: Mathematical Physics at Radboud University

This PhD project is based at Radboud University in the Netherlands, within the Department of Mathematics and the Radboud Center for Natural Philosophy (RCNP). The position sits at the intersection of mathematical physics, theoretical physics, and the history and philosophy of physics, and is part of the Origins of Irreversibility project funded by the John Templeton Foundation.

The research theme is fundamental physics out of equilibrium, with a special focus on gravitational and holographic systems. Topics mentioned in the vacancy include black holes, entropy, irreversibility, cosmological horizons, dynamical horizon entropy, Noether charge approaches to gravitational entropy, black hole phase transitions, non-equilibrium thermodynamics, quantum field theory in curved spacetime, semiclassical gravity, gravitational path integrals, one-loop corrections to horizon entropy, holographic descriptions of dynamical black holes, and holographic heat engines. The exact direction can be adapted to the successful candidate’s background and interests.

The successful PhD candidate will be affiliated with RCNP and will participate in seminars, reading groups, conferences, and workshops that bring together mathematicians, physicists, philosophers, and historians of science. There is also collaboration with researchers in the wider Origins of Irreversibility project. In addition, the role includes teaching assistance in mathematics and mathematical physics of approximately 0.2 FTE during the first three years.

Eligibility highlights include a Master’s degree in mathematics with a strong physics background, preferably in mathematical physics, or a Master’s degree in theoretical physics with a strong mathematical background. Applicants who are expected to complete their degree before the start date may also apply. Further academic training in philosophy is welcomed, alongside a clear interest in the RCNP mission of strengthening connections between mathematics, physics, and the history and philosophy of science. Strong English writing and speaking skills are required.

The appointment is a temporary employment contract at 1.0 FTE for 1.5 years, followed by extension to a total of four years subject to positive evaluation. The salary starts at €3,204 gross per month and rises to €4,051 in year four, with holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus.
