About this position

RWTH Aachen University is offering a PhD position in the Department of Chemistry on molecular nanostructures and 2D materials on surfaces using UHV STM/AFM. The project sits at the intersection of surface physics, physical chemistry, and nanoscience, and focuses on self-assembled molecular nanostructures, on-surface reactions, and the transformation of specially designed molecules into low-dimensional carbon nanostructures on metal surfaces and 2D materials.

The research will use advanced ultrahigh-vacuum scanning probe methods, including scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) and non-contact atomic force microscopy (nc-AFM), at temperatures from 5 K to room temperature. The work is designed to probe both the atomic structure and the electronic structure of the systems studied. The project includes close collaboration with theoretical physics and synthetic chemistry groups, and the synthetic collaborators will supply tailor-made molecular building blocks with functional groups designed for the project.

The position offers outstanding infrastructure, state-of-the-art equipment, and broad interdisciplinary collaboration opportunities. The project is a collaboration between RWTH Aachen University and FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree in Physics, Materials Science, Nanoscience, or Physical Chemistry, with a preference for candidates who already have experience in surface science, ultrahigh-vacuum instrumentation, or scanning probe microscopy. A strong motivation for research, teamwork, scientific writing, and presentations is expected, as well as excellent English skills (at least B2 level).

A solid background in surface science and prior experience with ultrahigh vacuum surface analysis equipment or scanning probe microscopy is preferred but not mandatory. Candidates should be motivated, enthusiastic, and able to work well in a team. Excellent communication skills, the ability to write scientific papers and deliver presentations, and a good command of English (oral and written, at least B2) are required.
