About this position
The Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC) in Barcelona, Spain is offering a PhD position within the COVALLU project on atmospheric chemistry and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in rainwater. This predoctoral project focuses on a timely and underexplored topic: how VOCs interact with precipitation and what these processes may mean for ecosystem functioning in Mediterranean environments.
The successful candidate will join the Environmental Geochemistry and Atmospheric Research (EGAR) group at IDAEA-CSIC, a highly international and interdisciplinary research environment with expertise in atmospheric chemistry, air quality, exposure science, environmental health, ecology, and environmental modelling. The project combines field observations, laboratory experiments, advanced chemical analysis, and data integration to better understand VOC cycling between the atmosphere and ecosystems.
The PhD researcher will work with state-of-the-art instrumentation, including a Proton Transfer Reaction Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer (PTR-ToF-MS), and will contribute to field campaigns, environmental monitoring, development and optimization of analytical methods, chemical analysis of air and rainwater samples, statistical treatment of large datasets, and dissemination through publications, conferences, and stakeholder activities.
This is a full-time temporary PhD position based in Barcelona, Spain. The call states that the candidate should hold a relevant master’s degree in Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, Atmospheric Sciences, Ecology, Physics, Earth Sciences, Environmental Engineering, or a related field. Experience in laboratory work, environmental monitoring, or data analysis is an advantage, and programming skills in tools such as R or Python are desirable. Strong English communication skills and a proactive, collaborative attitude are expected.

What's required
A master's degree in Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, Atmospheric Sciences, Ecology, Physics, Earth Sciences, Environmental Engineering or a related discipline is required. Experience with laboratory work, environmental monitoring and/or data analysis is considered an advantage. Programming and data-analysis skills such as Wavemtrics, R, Python or similar are desirable. Good written and oral communication skills in English are required, and the candidate should be proactive, enthusiastic, collaborative, and strongly motivated to develop innovative research ideas in an interdisciplinary scientific environment.
