About this position
The Adolphe Merkle Institute’s Quantum Sensing & Spin Chemistry Group, led by Assistant Professor John Abendroth, is offering an ERC-funded PhD position focused on 'Quantum Sensing of Chiral-Induced Spin Selectivity' (CISS). This interdisciplinary project aims to measure and understand the behavior of electron spin pairs in chiral molecules created by light, using diamond-based quantum sensors. The spin dynamics of these radical pairs are central to both biological processes and quantum information science applications. CISS describes spin-dependent interactions in chiral molecules, which can influence the polarization and coherence of radical pairs. The project’s goal is to utilize fluorescent nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond to probe these spin properties and the influence of CISS at the single-molecule level.
The successful candidate will participate in constructing custom-built instrumentation for confocal microscopy, conducting optically detected magnetic resonance experiments with single-spin quantum sensors, and performing spin-dynamics simulations. The position offers opportunities to present research at international conferences, publish in leading journals, and mentor Masters-level projects. The research environment at AMI is highly collaborative, with outstanding infrastructure and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Physics, Physical Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, or a related field. Experience in quantum engineering or magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR/EPR techniques) is advantageous. Experience with optics and/or high-frequency electronics is especially valued, and programming skills for data acquisition and analysis are highly desirable. Candidates should be able to advance a complex project independently and as part of a team, possess excellent communication skills, and demonstrate proficiency in English.
The position is fully funded through the ERC Horizon Europe programme and offers attractive employment conditions.
