About this position

The Swiss Seismological Service (SED) at ETH Zürich is offering a fully funded PhD position focused on the seismic detection, localization, and characterization of explosion events in underground ammunition storage facilities. This research is part of a multi-year applied project in collaboration with armasuisse Science and Technology, industry partners, and the Swiss Armed Forces. The project aims to advance scientific understanding and practical monitoring systems for underground infrastructure, contributing to rapid alerting and safety.

Seismic and fiber-optic sensing technologies are central to the project, providing real-time solutions for detecting and characterizing hazardous events. The research will evaluate sensor technologies, design and optimize multi-sensor monitoring networks, and develop advanced detection and localization algorithms tailored to complex 3D underground geometries. Experimental campaigns will be conducted in BedrettoLab (ETH Zürich) and Hondrich underground test facilities (armasuisse), involving field installations, data collection, processing, and system optimization.

The PhD candidate will participate in controlled test explosions, evaluate seismic sensors (including distributed acoustic sensing), define optimal sensor geometry, calibrate velocity models, and ensure quality control of data acquisition. Algorithm development will include integration of multi-sensor data streams into seismological software frameworks (such as SeisComP), wave propagation modeling, event detection, high-precision localization, magnitude estimation, and source characterization. The candidate will also contribute to cost-optimized alarm system implementation and collaborate with engineering companies, the Swiss Armed Forces, armasuisse, and international partners for efficient system rollout.

Applicants should have an MSc degree in Geophysics, Seismology, Earth Sciences, Physics, Engineering, or a related field. Strong quantitative, analytical, and programming skills (Python required) are essential, with experience in seismic data processing and wave propagation modeling considered advantageous. The role requires willingness to participate in field campaigns, interest in applied research, and motivation for interdisciplinary collaboration. Strong communication skills in German and English are preferred.

The PhD position is fully funded for up to 4 years, with employment according to ETH Zurich regulations. The candidate will have access to the Bedretto Underground Laboratory and opportunities for publications and international conference participation.
