About this position
The Swiss Seismological Service (SED) at ETH Zürich is offering a fully funded PhD position focused on the seismic detection, localization, and characterization of explosion events in underground ammunition storage facilities. This research is part of a multi-year applied project in collaboration with armasuisse Science and Technology, industry partners, and the Swiss Armed Forces. The project aims to advance scientific understanding and practical monitoring systems for underground infrastructure, contributing to rapid alerting and safety.
Seismic and fiber-optic sensing technologies are central to the project, providing real-time solutions for detecting and characterizing hazardous events. The research involves evaluating sensor technologies, designing and optimizing multi-sensor monitoring networks, and developing advanced detection and localization algorithms tailored to complex 3D underground geometries. Experimental campaigns will be conducted in BedrettoLab (ETH Zürich) and Hondrich underground test facilities (armasuisse), spanning from 2026 to 2029. Activities include field installations, data collection, processing, algorithm development, and system optimization.
The PhD candidate will participate in controlled test explosions, evaluate seismic sensors (including distributed acoustic sensing), and help design and install a multi-sensor monitoring network. Responsibilities include defining optimal sensor geometry, calibrating velocity models, ensuring data quality, and integrating multi-sensor data streams into seismological software frameworks such as SeisComP. The candidate will also develop and optimize event detection algorithms, high-precision localization methods, and source characterization techniques, contributing to real-time alarm systems and cost-optimized monitoring concepts for future underground facilities.
Applicants should have an MSc degree in Geophysics, Seismology, Earth Sciences, Physics, Engineering, or a related field. Strong quantitative, analytical, and programming skills (Python required) are essential, with experience in seismic data processing and wave propagation modeling considered advantageous. The role requires willingness to participate in field campaigns, interest in applied research, and motivation for interdisciplinary collaboration. Strong communication skills in German and English are preferred.
ETH Zürich offers a collaborative environment bridging research, field experiments, and real-world applications. The position is supervised by senior scientists at the Swiss Seismological Service and involves working within a multidisciplinary consortium including public authorities and industry partners. The university values diversity, sustainability, and equal opportunity, fostering an inclusive culture and climate-neutral future.
To apply, submit your application online via the ETH Zurich portal, including a motivation letter, CV, academic transcripts, and contact details of 2–3 references. Applications via email or postal services will not be considered. The preferred start date is July 2026 or as soon as possible. For questions regarding the position, contact Dr. Valentin Gischig ([email protected]). Further information about BedrettoLab is available on the ETH Zürich website.
