The Bonn International Graduate School for Development Research (BIGS-DR) at the Center for Development Research (ZEF), University of Bonn, offers a structured and interdisciplinary PhD programme focused on development research. Established in 1999, BIGS-DR provides outstanding opportunities for research, international collaboration, and tailored qualification programmes. The doctoral programme is designed for those seeking a career in sustainable development, research, project implementation, or policy-making. Research topics at ZEF include agriculture, land use, climate change, water resources management, biodiversity, food and nutrition, health, gender, migration, urbanisation, governance, conflict, markets, services, and innovation policy. The programme is full-time, typically lasting three and a half years, with most students completing their dissertations within four years.

Students participate in coursework, field research, and soft skills workshops covering academic writing, intercultural communication, leadership, and ethics. The programme offers intensive supervision and tutorship by a team of experts, including supervisors and senior researchers at ZEF. Upon successful completion, students are awarded a doctoral degree from one of the University of Bonn’s faculties (agriculture, natural sciences, social sciences, economics, etc.).

BIGS-DR is highly international, with over 500 students from 100 countries having participated. Each cohort includes 20–30 students from diverse disciplinary backgrounds. The programme features international guest lecturers, intercultural training, and projects with partners in Germany and abroad. Course-specific German language courses are integrated, and students benefit from a vibrant academic and cultural environment.

There are no tuition fees, but students must pay a semester contribution of about 330 EUR, which covers a transit pass and accident insurance. Living costs in Bonn are estimated at 1,300 EUR per month, and research funds required range from 5,000 to 20,000 EUR depending on the project. DAAD EPOS scholarships are available for eligible applicants, and all students must secure their own funding for living and research expenses.

Applicants must have an excellent Master’s or equivalent degree (GPA >3.0 American system or >2.0 German system), at least two years of relevant work experience, a strong research concept, and certified English proficiency (IELTS band 6, TOEFL 550/213/80, or university waiver). The last MA degree should have been obtained within the past six years. Application deadlines are 31 August for DAAD EPOS scholarship applicants and 1 May for those with secured funding, for an October start. Applications are submitted online via the BIGS-DR portal.
