About this position

Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH is advertising a Postdoc position in Nuclear Fuel Performance and Fission Gas Modelling within the Institute of Fusion Energy and Nuclear Waste Management (IFN) / Nuclear Waste Management (IFN-2). The role is part of the Ministry for Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN) project “Atlas” and focuses on the long-term behavior of high burn-up spent nuclear fuel during extended interim storage.

The successful candidate will use and develop computational methods, especially the SCIANTIX code, and couple mesoscale fission gas behavior models with engineering-scale fuel performance codes such as BISON and TRANSURANUS. Research topics include diffusion, resolution, bubble evolution, delayed fission gas release, microstructural evolution, and the chemical and mechanical effects that influence storage stability and licensing.

This is a 3-year fixed-term postdoc position, contingent upon project approval, with salary according to EG 13 TVöD-Bund. The package includes pension contributions, a year-end bonus, capital-forming benefits, and support for conference and training participation.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a Master’s degree followed by a PhD in Nuclear Engineering, Computational Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, or a closely related field. Strong experience in mesoscale or engineering-scale modelling of nuclear fuel materials is highly desirable, along with programming skills in Python, C++, or Fortran. Excellent English scientific writing and communication skills are required (at least B2 CEFR), and a publication record is expected.

Location: Jülich, Germany. Start: as soon as possible. Deadline: the position remains open until filled.
