About this position
Technical University of Munich (TUM), Chair of Complex Soft Matter, is recruiting a Research Associate – Multivalent Colloid Science (E13) with the opportunity to pursue a doctorate. The project sits in the area of supramolecular colloidal nanomaterials for medicine and diagnostics, with a strong focus on molecular self-assembly, biointerfaces, nanoparticle synthesis, surface functionalization, and selective biomolecular recognition.
The position contributes to the ERC Consolidator Grant project Engineering Multivalency for Superselective Recognition of Pathogen Targets (EngToTarget). The work combines experimental chemistry with automated experimentation and data-driven materials design. Responsibilities include high-throughput synthesis and characterization of multivalent colloidal nanoparticles, studying interactions with biological targets in complex environments, developing reproducible workflows, analyzing data, documenting protocols, and contributing to publications, presentations, and teaching/support of student projects.
Applicants should hold a master's degree or equivalent in chemistry, materials science, nanoscience, chemical engineering, or a related field. Experimental experience in synthetic chemistry, colloid science, soft matter, or functional nanomaterials is expected; experience with ligand synthesis, nanoparticle synthesis, or surface functionalization is a plus. Familiarity with NMR, mass spectrometry, light scattering, UV-vis, or fluorescence spectroscopy is beneficial. Strong English communication skills, independent and collaborative working style, and motivation to pursue a doctorate are important.
The role is based at TUM in Germany and is funded for four years, subject to positive progress evaluation. Applications must be submitted as a single PDF by 15 November 2026 to [email protected]. Informal inquiries can be directed to Prof. Stefan Guldin at [email protected].
