About this position
The University of Bergen invites applications for a PhD Research Fellow in Applied and Computational Mathematics, hosted by the Department of Mathematics and affiliated with the Center for Sustainable Subsurface Resources (CSSR). This is a 3-year, full-time position, with the possibility of a 4th year dedicated to career development activities such as teaching. The position is funded by the University of Bergen and offers a competitive salary (NOK 568,700 per year), pension, and welfare benefits.
The successful candidate will join CSSR, a national research hub funded by the Norwegian Research Council, focused on developing digital solutions to reduce Norway’s offshore emissions. The research project centers on the development, analysis, and implementation of new nonlinear iterative solvers for multi-model analysis and simulation of subsurface operations. The work will involve high-performance computing, reduced-order models, and data-driven (machine-learned) representations, with a particular interest in integrating simpler models into full-physics simulations. The project combines theoretical foundations from numerical and functional analysis with practical applications in fluid mechanics and porous media.
Applicants must hold (or be about to complete) a master’s degree in applied and computational mathematics, scientific computing, or a closely related field. Required qualifications include experience with functional analysis or analysis of partial differential equations. Additional experience with preconditioning, non-standard nonlinear solvers, and numerical methods for fluid mechanics or porous media is advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate strong independent and collaborative working skills, as well as proficiency in written and spoken English. Admission to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Science and Technology is required within two months of starting the position.
The position offers exciting development opportunities in a strong professional environment, with the possibility of a 4th year for career-promoting work. The University of Bergen is committed to diversity and encourages applications from all qualified candidates, including women, individuals with disabilities, and those with immigrant backgrounds.
For further information, contact Professor Jan Martin Nordbotten ([email protected]) or researcher Eirik Keilegavlen ([email protected]). Applications must be submitted online via Jobbnorge, including all required documents and references, by 1 February 2026.
