About this position
PhD Research Fellow in Applied and Computational Mathematics at the University of Bergen, Department of Mathematics, with a research focus on modeling and simulation for giga-scale CO2 storage.
The position is hosted by the Porous Media Group, a research group working on numerical and computational methods for processes in porous materials, with a particular emphasis on geological applications. The project is part of gigaCCS, a Norwegian Research Council-funded center for environmentally friendly energy research and large-scale carbon capture and subsurface storage. The successful candidate will contribute to Work Package 3.1, “Regional storage scale-up,” and will work on the impact of macro dispersion on the efficiency of large-scale storage operations.
Research topics may include upscaling, discretization methods, numerical analysis, and the design and implementation of numerical methods in open-source scientific computing software. The methods developed will be tested on setups relevant to storage formations in the North Sea. This makes the position particularly attractive for candidates interested in computational mathematics, porous media flow, numerical modeling, and CO2 storage applications.
The appointment is for 3 years, with a possible 4th year depending on the candidate’s qualifications and the department’s teaching needs. If granted, the 4th year includes career-promoting work such as teaching, dissemination, or research infrastructure/services. The position is funded by UiB and offers a salary as a PhD research fellow in the state salary scale, currently NOK 593 700 per year before taxes, plus pension enrollment and welfare benefits.
Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a master’s degree or equivalent in applied and computational mathematics, scientific computing, computational physics, or computational geoscience. Master students may apply if they will complete the final exam before 1 March 2027. Required experience includes partial differential equations and related discretization methods, as well as mathematics of flow in porous media. Good English skills, independence, structured working style, and collaboration skills are expected. Experience with computational science software development is advantageous.
Application requirements are extensive and include a short account of research interests and motivation, a detailed qualification statement addressing each requirement and listed advantage, names and contact information for two referees, CV, transcripts and diplomas, English proficiency documentation if required, thesis or thesis draft, and a list of scientific works/publications. Applications and certified translations must be uploaded via Jobbnorge by 5 November 2026.
Academic contacts for further information are Senior Researcher Eirik Keilegavlen and Professor Jan Martin Nordbotten at the Department of Mathematics, University of Bergen.

What's required
Applicants must hold a master's degree or equivalent education in applied and computational mathematics, scientific computing, computational physics or computational geoscience. Master students may apply if they complete their final master exam before 2027-03-01, but the master's degree must be awarded before employment starts. Experience with partial differential equations and related discretization methods is required, as is experience with the mathematics of flow in porous media. Experience with software development for computational science is an advantage. Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner, demonstrate good collaborative skills, and be proficient in both written and oral English. Personal and relational qualities, research experience, ambitions and potential will be considered.
How to apply
Apply through Jobbnorge. Upload a motivation letter, detailed qualification statement, CV, transcripts and diplomas, English proficiency documentation if required, a copy or draft of the master’s thesis, publication list, any publications, and contact information for two referees. Certified translations into English or a Scandinavian language must be included if needed.
