About this position
University of South-Eastern Norway (USN) is advertising a PhD research fellow position in green syngas production from biomass waste gasification with CO2 capture. The position is based at the Department of Process, Energy and Environmental Technology, Faculty of Technology, Natural Sciences and Maritime Sciences, and the workplace is campus Porsgrunn, Norway.
The project focuses on biomass waste utilization, renewable energy processes, fluidized bed gasification, CO2 absorption/capture, and computational particle fluid dynamics (CPFD) model development. The research combines lab-scale experiments with modelling to improve understanding of CO2 absorption in biomass gasification and to develop viable technology for sustainable commercial conversion of biomass waste to biofuels.
This is an educational PhD position intended for organised research training. The fellowship is for three years, and the successful candidate must be admitted to the PhD in Technology programme within three months of starting. The post is affiliated with the Research Group in Energy and Environmental Technology (URGENT).
Eligibility highlights: Master’s degree (120 ECTS or equivalent) in Process Technology, Energy and Environmental Technology, or Mechanical Engineering; weighted average grade of B or better; master’s thesis approved by the deadline; strong English skills; and ability to meet doctoral admission requirements. Preferred experience includes fluidized bed technology, biomass gasification, lab-scale reactor design and operation, experimental work, and CFD modelling.
Funding: salary according to the Norwegian State salary scale for PhD research fellows (position code 1017), listed as NOK 550,800, with pension and related benefits through the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
Application window: deadline is 8 October 2026. Applicants must submit the application electronically via Jobbnorge together with diplomas, thesis, project proposal (2–4 pages / 600–1200 words), motivation statement, English documentation, references, and other required documents.
Contacts: Associate Professor Nora Cecilie I. S. Furuvik and Associate Professor Ali Ghaderi are listed as academic contacts.
