About this position
PhD Research Fellow position in Machine Learning for Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Oslo, Department of Informatics, in the Digital Signal Processing and Image Analysis group (DSB), Section for Machine Learning.
The project is cross-disciplinary and combines machine learning, deep learning, time series analysis, signal processing, and cognitive neuroscience. The successful candidate will develop learning frameworks and neural network architectures, including transformer models, to study how the human brain encodes information, perception, and memory using neural activity data from rodents and humans.
Research topics include local field potentials, action potentials, neural network modeling, and analysis of datasets from the CoCo database and human movie-viewing experiments. The project is led by Adín Ramírez Rivera and Jørgen Sugar, with research links to Bradley Voytek at the University of California San Diego.
This is a PhD opening for three years, with a possible extension up to four years depending on teaching and other duties. The position starts no later than 2026-12-31. Salary is NOK 550,800–595,000 depending on competence and experience.
Applicants should have a master's degree or equivalent in computer science, physics, applied mathematics, electrical engineering, cybernetics, data science, computational science, neuroscience, or a related field. Required skills include Python, PyTorch, machine learning, mathematics, linear algebra, statistics, and fluent English. Preferred experience includes transformer models, attention mechanisms, probabilistic machine learning, and time-series modeling.
Apply through Jobbnorge with a cover letter, CV, transcripts, diplomas, recommendation letters, English documentation if needed, publication list, and references. Foreign applicants should include an explanation of their grading system. Deadline: 2026-09-09.
