About this position

University of South-Eastern Norway (USN), School of Business, invites applications for a fully funded PhD Research Fellow position in Management focused on AI solutions for sustainable maritime industry.

The doctoral project examines how artificial intelligence can support sustainable industrial transformation, especially in maritime contexts. Research themes include how AI solutions are developed, designed, commercialized, and scaled; platform ecosystems; innovation management; business model innovation; governance; organizational capabilities; and sustainability outcomes such as fuel efficiency, predictive maintenance, safety, emissions reduction, and resource optimization.

The successful candidate will be affiliated with the project AIMAR – Unlocking AI Solutions for a Sustainable Maritime Industry: Developing Business Models, Capabilities, and Ecosystems, funded by the Research Council of Norway, and with the Innovation Management and Market Dynamics research group.

This is a three-year PhD research training position starting 01.01.2027. The workplace is USN Campus Vestfold, Horten, Norway. Salary follows the Norwegian State salary scale for PhD research fellows (position code 1017), with pension benefits.

Eligibility highlights include a relevant master’s degree (Business Administration, Management, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Industrial Engineering and Management, Strategy, Information Systems, Economics, Social Sciences, or related fields), a weighted average grade of B or higher, documented methodological competence in both quantitative and qualitative methods, and documented English proficiency. Applicants must also meet Norwegian recognition requirements for foreign education and, where applicable, security clearance and doctoral admission requirements.

Applicants must submit a short application text, diplomas, methodology documentation, grading explanation if needed, master’s thesis or summary, English test documentation, publications, references, and a 4–5 page project proposal. The project proposal should include the research problem, questions, theory, methods, data/sample, timeline, and references.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
